Academic Program

The Altos de Chavón School of Design’s program of studies consists of two academic years divided into four semesters. Courses in the first academic year, the Foundation Year, introduce the general concepts of art and design referred to as “visual literacy" and are taken by all students. An emphasis on drawing provides students with skills that graduates of other design schools often lack. After completing the basic courses, students progress to the Second Year, where they specialize in their chosen major.

The School of Design reserves the right to make changes in the program and curricular offerings as it deems necessary, as well as to cancel, in part or in its entirety, any program that does not have a sufficient number of matriculated students

Foundation Year

Drawing has been the essential language of art and design since Lascaux, and the Foundation Year is all about the magic of drawing from observation. The curriculum introduces students to the fundamentals of design and the design process, design in two and three dimensions, and digital design, along with the rich history of design. Through the art history program and liberal arts courses, Foundation Year students develop methods of investigation and analysis. They also come to understand the characteristics, conditions, and interests common to the different art and design specialties.
